Citation Basics: MLA

The MLA Citation Instructional Toolkit is a modular online learning resource developed during a summer instructional design internship at the Noel Studio for Academic Creativity at Eastern Kentucky University. Designed to promote ethical source use and academic integrity, this toolkit offers foundational instruction in MLA style and citation practices for undergraduate students across disciplines.

The resource consists of two concise instructional video modules (6–7 minutes each), accompanied by an interactive digital worksheet to reinforce key concepts. Intended for asynchronous use within writing-intensive courses, the toolkit provides students with the tools to responsibly integrate sources and format citations in MLA style, while offering instructors a structured, ready-to-use learning activity.

By completing this toolkit, students will:

  • Understand the value of ethical citation and the role of source attribution in building academic credibility.
  • Apply the basic conventions of MLA formatting to their written work.
  • Use in-text citations and Works Cited entries correctly, following examples and standard rules.
  • Demonstrate understanding through completion of the Citation Basics Worksheet.

The toolkit is designed as a flexible, low-barrier instructional supplement and can be easily integrated into Blackboard, Canvas, or Google-based classrooms. It is not intended to replace more detailed instruction, but rather to provide an accessible introduction to citation concepts that instructors can build upon. Additional guidance is encouraged through instructor feedback, external resources (such as Purdue OWL), or individual consultations with writing center staff.

This project reflects a practical, student-centered approach to digital instructional design and supports a broader mission of academic support and skill-building at the university level.
